The CV-S Excelsior Chapter of the National Honor Society is now accepting applications for 2016-2017 new members. We would like to inform you about this society and the criteria for selection as members.
When the National Honor Society was founded in 1921, the hope of NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals) was to create an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential in a democracy. These ideals of scholarship, leadership, character and service remain as relevant today as they were in 1921. The NHS is respected throughout the United States and can be a positive factor as students apply to college.
The Faculty Council of the chapter selects students who demonstrate outstanding performance in all four criteria. First, the student is identified with the prerequisite of a cumulative average, from grades 9-10 or 9-11, of 85 or above. Then the candidate is evaluated in the areas of leadership, character and service. These evaluations are based on input from the candidate given in an information packet. This packet is not an application, but rather a synopsis of the student’s awards, honors and activities in and outside of school. Teachers and staff are asked to evaluate the candidate in all the areas. All the information gathered is then discussed confidentially and a decision is made about selection.
The advisor of the chapter informs, by letter, candidates who are selected and also those not selected at that time. Candidates or parents of those not selected are invited to discuss with the advisor the reasons for not being selected, if they so wish.
As an inducted member of the NHS, the student has a big responsibility to uphold the tenets of the society: to maintain the 85 or above level of academic achievement, to model excellent character and to continue to serve school and community. We are a service organization. We hold high standards of excellence and we need to strive to live up to the lofty goals set for this society.
NHS membership is a lifetime honor and we look forward to welcoming new members to our chapter. It is our hope that what is learned during our time together as a chapter at CV-S will impact each member’s life in a positive and productive way.
